Welcome to the LGBTQIA2S+ Directory of Archives in the United States and Canada. You will find two spreadsheets. The first page focuses on LGBTQ+ specific archives rather than collections housed at larger institutions and archives. There is an exception for previously independent LGBTQ archives that have now become part of a larger archive as a collection. The second page showcases fantastic collections and resources that did not fall under the purview of the first page but are still important resources.
There is not a hierarchy between the first and second page resources. I initially developed this list for my personal research projects but I wanted to share this resource with the larger community. This two page is imperfect and makes clear why the SAA Lavender Legacies (last updated in 2012) did not distinguish between these different resources. However, by having this divided spreadsheet, I can continue to share LGBTQ2S+ resources, while also still attending to the needs of my original research project.
Thank you to everyone who shared resources. I'm also grateful for the 2012 SAA guide Lavender Legacies resource which has served as a base: https://www2.archivists.org/groups/diverse-sexuality-and-gender-section/lavender-legacies-guide
Please feel welcome to share this resource widely. If you notice any archives or resources missing, you can leave a comment on the sheet or email Dr. Alex Ketchum at alexandraketchum@gmail.com.
